CHAPTER 13

Beauty and Health

Attractiveness—even beauty—begins with health. Health is the underlying radiance that glows from beneath the skin. Health imbues every aspect of your physical and psychological being. It inspires your every movement; it provides balance to your emotions; it makes your mind sharp while giving you greater tolerance and understanding of others. The signs of health are recognized by everyone: glowing, clean skin, a firm body moving with agility and grace. People who are unhealthy tend to have short tempers, greater emotional ups and downs, wide swings in energy, and—obviously—an array of unpleasant physical symptoms. Health is the ultimate integrator, unifying the most tangible physical aspects of our being with the loftiest and most spiritual. Health is so much more than body weight, but it does provide the basis for normal weight. Even more, health is the foundation of beauty.

We all recognize a healthy appearance when we see it, and no amount of makeup will camouflage the look of poor health.

Youth is associated with an attractive appearance, largely because young people are usually still healthy. As people age, they commonly lose their health, and this decay is reflected in a loss of attractiveness. But it doesn’t have to be so. You can’t stop the passage of years, but you can moderate the toll time takes on you and the way you look. To look your best during every decade of life, you must take advantage of the benefits of eating and living well.

Even after years of abuse, people regain their health and attractiveness when they change their diet and lifestyle. I see the dramatic changes in less than two weeks at my clinic at St. Helena Hospital; in twelve days, people become healthier and seem to grow younger. The change is evident to their fellow patients and the clinic staff, but is particularly striking to family who have not seen them for twelve days.

Beautiful Teeth, Skin, and Hair, and a Healthy Smile

Sugar is widely known as a cause of tooth decay. However, few people recognize that other substances contribute to the health and longevity of your teeth and gums. Among the most important of these are vitamins, minerals, fiber, and protein. A diet high in animal protein depletes calcium and causes the loss of the bones that hold the teeth. A combination of a healthy diet and excellent dental hygiene, including flossing, frequent brushing, and regular visits to the dental hygienist, can reverse serious gum disease—and in many cases avoid surgery.

In the Pink

Red blood cells, shaped like tiny doughnuts, carry oxygen from your lungs to tissue cells throughout your body. These red cells, which are about 7.5 microns (millionths of a meter) in diameter, are capable of fitting into tiny blood vessels, called capillaries, that are only 3.5 microns in diameter. Like so many circus clowns that can climb into a Volkswagen, these red blood cells are highly flexible; they can bend in half in order to fit into the smallest of your body’s capillaries so that no cell in your body is deprived of oxygen.
